There were few large cities in Assyria. The names of the most important cities were Assur, Nineveh, and Kalhu. Many people who lived in the city were craftworkers or traders. Craftworkers made beautiful pottery, and objects from gold, silver, bronze, ivory, and wood.
There were high walls which encircled the cities to protect residents from attack and they were also guarded by archers. Outside the city walls there were orchards. Fruits and vegetables were grown in gardens.
