Assyrian Language
The ancient Assyrians spoke an Assyrian dialect of the Akkadian language. The first inscriptions, called Old Assyrian, were made during the period of Old Assyria. During the period of Neo-Assyria the Aramaic language became the most common language. It was thought to be extensively due to the mass deportations that were undertaken by Assyrian kings. The large Aramaic-speaking populations that were conquered by the Assyrians, were moved to ther parts of the empire. The Assyrians also used the Sumerian language in their literature and liturgy.
There were records of the Assyrians that developed a trading center in 2000 BC. This period is known as the period of Old Assyria that lasted until about 1365. The period of Middle Assyria was a period of economic and cultural growth.
